My family vetoed my decision to leave Florida

My comments in purple.

My family vetoed my decision to fly to KS on Fri.

I refuse to be obstinate.

I have Alzheimer's.  I decided when I first had the diagnosis that I would listen to family.

Four of the Five units have clearly stated I should not leave.

Thus I have made my wife happy with my my change of mind as she is being pulled between her adult children and me.

I think the correspondence is interesting

Andrew,
Thank you for your opinion. I believe many others feel the same way.

The main point you may have missed is that we hope to get out on Friday.

After that because Florida is has a large population that travels a lot, this state will be on lock down much sooner that Kansas.

Perhaps you don't understand the Exponential increase in the virus spread?

Very few positive cases in Kansas.  Even when it gets higher KS will never have as many infected people as Florida will.

Florida will be closed down much sooner.

When a million people in Florida have the virus the next day 2 million people will have the virus.

Finally after Trump finally admitted to the danger yesterday, the 40% who thought the virus was a hoax will now take more precautions.

Take into account if the hospital can take care of us.

Florida's hospitals will be overwhelmed before Kansas hospitals will be overwhelmed.

If we stay in Florida we have a high risk of getting COVID-19!

We have  a small risk now in this window of opportunity during the 3.5 hour nonstop flight.

As Brad Pitt said in Z war:

"I have been in many crisis like this, one thing I learned is if you don't move on you die"

Of course there we are taking a risk.

Must weigh which has the better long term risk.

Dear Jamie E
Thank you for your concern and your response. I appreciate the input.

Two weeks ago Italy was maybe as we are today.
On TV this morning:
In just two weeks the numbers increased considerably causing lockdown but still record deaths yesterday.

We need to get out of Florida before that happens here in Florida.
It probably will not happen in Kansas till much later.

Ginger was depressed a week ago.
She misses Kansas and family.
I have been very happy here but I am also ready to go home and hunker down..

We may have our flight cancelled?
If that happens we will drive home which is more dangerous.
We are determined to get home.

Now is the time to do it.
Otherwise we may be stuck down here for 6 months.

Thanks Jaime H,
It is going to get much worse before it gets better and now is the window of opportunity.

I appreciate everyones concern.

However you are suddenly are acting on fear and not reason.

When Florida gets much worse in two weeks and Kansas is good will you, Andrew and Jaime say you are sorry?

I am an Infectious disease specialist.  I can see down the road in two weeks.

We will be much more likely to get COVID-19 in Florida.

Change of position

I am sending a request to Lee and Luke.

I want to be reasonable and listen to my family.
I have Alzheimers I know I need to do that more.
I refuse to be obstinate but I need unanimity in the family.
If things go bad in Florida as I predict, I don't want one side of the family blaming the other side.

If there is not unanimity we will try to get back to Florida.
If that turns out to be a bad decision then everyone can blame me.

Best case scenario the virus will plateau in two weeks?
Then you guys were correct.
I still worry the 40% who thought Trump was doing a good job will still not take it seriously despite the President's change of tune yesterday.

New decision by me
After reading the three response from family and talking to Ginger I am sending a request to Lee and Luke.

My son in New Orleans was driving UBER so he could not respond.
I called him and he did not respond.
I called his wife at work.
She had read the above letter and had talked to Luke about it last night.
She is worried and rather we stay home.
Luke told her I a made some very good points.
I told her I need him to write that to other people in family so they don't think I'm crazy.

Luke just called me.
He said he wanted to talk it out with me.
I gave him the higher risk in Florida vs Kansas long term
He understood but if we keep strict quarantine will be okay.

I told him we had already cancelled our flights as I was going to listen to 4 out 5 family units no matter what his vote was.

Final Decision:

We will stay in Florida

  1. Staying put is hard to disagree with. Wait and see, gather info and opinion and then update decision or stand pat. We are 3 hours away; school is closed till the end of the month; we are available. And we
have 19 rolls of toilet paper on the shelf.
